Who is the service is for?

The service is for children who have difficulties in developing speech, language and communication skills. A service is also provided to children who have difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing.

For speech, language and communication services for adults, visit the Adult Speech and Language Therapy pages.

Where is the service provided?

Services are provided out of a number of Health Centres, Children’s Centres and schools in Islington.

What does the service do?

  • We offer a service to children and families attending Children’s Centres to support the development of speech, language and communication skills.
  • We offer appointments at Health Centres or schools to children who have been identified as having difficulty in developing speech, language and communication skills.
  • We assess children’s speech, language, communication or swallowing skills and needs, and identify the best way of supporting these.
  • We work collaboratively with parents and the child’s education team and/or wider team to develop the child’s speech, language, communication or swallowing skills.
  • We liaise with other professionals involved with a child once parents have given permission for this.

How do children access the service?

There is an open referral system for this service. This means that parents, GPs, Health Visitors, Paediatricians, Special Educational Needs Coordinators or other professionals may refer the child to the service.

Referrals for children attending mainstream schools will be managed by the Language and Communication Team, which is a multi-agency team of speech and language therapists and advisory teachers from the local education authority. Children who attend Special Schools are generally referred by the school.
