Our commissioning intentions

What are commissioning intentions?

Each year NHS Islington and Islington Council, working with local GPs, develop ‘intentions’ for commissioning health and social care services for the forthcoming year. The commissioning intentions process ensures our resources are focused on realising our mission and goals.

The NHS North Central London Sector team, which commissions acute health services on behalf of the NHS in Camden, Islington, Haringey, Enfield and Barnet, will provide commissioning intentions for the acute sector (i.e. hospitals).

Once key stakeholders have had an opportunity to provide feedback on the Commissioning Intentions, they become Commissioning Strategy Plans. These plans are communicated to the organisations that provide healthcare services, usually in the autumn. This is to give them adequate notice of any significant changes that will be made to contracts in the new financial year.

This year, the NHS White Paper and the current financial landscape provide clear direction of travel and context for this year’s review process.

Commissioning Intentions for 2011/12

The publication of our Commissioning Intentions is always the beginning of a process.

We published our Commissioning Intentions for 2011/12 in October 2010, after receiving initial comments about our clinical priorities from our service providers, GPs, voluntary sector organisations and Islington Council.

Throughout November, service providers and other organisations were invited to provide further feedback and specific comments relating to our intentions for their service area. Thank you to those service providers and others who provided feedback.

We are now collating all the feedback and will publish a final version early in the New Year, as part of an overarching Commissioning Intentions for 2011/12 for North Central London (Islington, Camden, Haringey, Enfield and Barnet). This document will inform contracting proposals for acute, primary, community and mental health services.

We will publish new information about our proposals on this page as it becomes available. We will also consult the public and our patients about any proposals that represent a substantial change to a service.
