Who are the services for?
Islington commissions a range of local Drug and Alcohol services to provide advice, information and treatment to:
- Islington residents who would like help and support around their own drug or alcohol use.
- Islington residents who are concerned about a friend, family member or significant other’s drug or alcohol use.
What do the services do?
There are a number of Drug and Alcohol Services in Islington that offer advice,information, treatment and access to further services. Most Drug and Alcohol Services will have a range of treatment options including counselling, group work, complementary therapies and prescribed services for opiate dependent users. These services are a good starting point for an initial assessment for drug and/or alcohol treatment.
The most appropriate services to access for an initial assessment, and referral to other services if required, are listed below.
For drug users

Whittington Health NHS Trust primary care, alcohol and drug services include specialist nursing support for the treatment of problem substance use; and the provision of primary health care to homeless persons / substance users within Islington who don’t have current GP registration.
- The Primary Care Alcohol and Drug service (PCADS) provides support to Islington GP practices and the Whittington Hospital for the treatment of their patients experiencing problem alcohol or drug use. Patients who are assessed as suitable for treatment within a primary care setting (who do not have severe physical or mental health problems) will be offered the following range of services from PCADS clinics based in their GP practice or Wittington hospital:
- Alcohol and drug misuse assessment
- Screening / Health promotion and harm reduction advice
- Risk assessment
- Blood Borne Virus (BBV) screening / vaccination / specialist referral
- Care planning and co-ordination
- Detox and maintenance prescribing for alcohol and drug dependence (GP practices only)
- Psychological therapies
- Relapse prevention support
- Family and carer support
Patients who have complex needs assessed as unsuitable for primary care based treatment will be referred to the specialist substance misuse services provided byCamdenand Islington NHS Foundation Trust.
- The Primary Care service (PCS) is for people who live in Islington and are either homeless or using local drug services and who are not registered at a local GP practice. The service, based at 99 Seven Sisters Rd, will identify and manage acute and chronic health problems and support patients in fully registering with a local GP practice as soon as possible. The service cannot offer GP registration so the following range of services is limited to those which best meet the needs of the target group:

- Vaccination and immunisation
- Treatment of minor aliments
- Chronic disease management / specialist referral
- Mental health screening / treatment / specialist referral
- Blood Borne Virus (BBV) screening / vaccination / specialist referral

Service offered: The service provides a highly specialist secondary service for patients with complex substance misuse problems and serious co-morbidities which is part of an integrated stepped-care system in Islington. It supports primary care and non-statutory sector specialist drug services, secondary mental health care and acute based treatment.
Treatment is offered to patients at two bases in Islington with the possibility of assessments at other clinic bases (including primary health care settings) as near to their home (or at home if necessary) as possible or at the service’s base depending on the patient’s preference and suitability of sites available. An on Site Dispensing Service is available at our site based atHolloway Road. The role of service user involvement is pivotal to the success of these services

Cranstoun City Roads is a specialist residential service providing safe medically supervised stabilisation or detoxification from drugs and/or alcohol.
Depending on your situation, access can be via the community service you are currently in contact with or you can self-refer on the crisis helpline. Once the
Admissions Team have taken your details, we will deal with any other professionals involved in your care. If you have not yet started any treatment, we might need to discuss your case with your local Drug and Alcohol Team.
During a stay of between 14-21 days people will undergo an individually assessed detoxification or stabilisation programme. Cranstoun City Roads will help you prepare and/or plan your move on to further rehabilitation and recovery in consultation with you and your care manager.
Services provided include:
- Crisis helpline
- 24 hour staffing including a qualified nurse on all shifts;
- Health assessment and appropriate treatment by one of our regular doctors;
- Detoxification (from drugs and/or alcohol);
- Stabilisation;
- One to one support sessions;
- Shiatsu;

- Full Body acupuncture;
- Indian head massage;
- Reiki;
- Creative activities to stimulate and help rebuild confidence;
- Support in addressing legal, financial and social difficulties;

Who is the service for:
Islington residents with alcohol problems (alcohol dependence or harmful drinking) and complex needs, including severe physical dependence, dual diagnosis, risk issues, childcare responsibilities.

- Comprehensive assessment of alcohol and associated problems.
- Community detoxification and referral to residential detoxification programmes.
- Individual structured psychosocial interventions.
- CBT group treatment for relapse prevention
- Community Care Assessment (CCA) and funding for residential rehabilitation programmes.

- Neuropsychological assessments.

CRI’s Criminal Justice Intervention Team (CJIT) provides a ‘gateway’ service for clients either involved with or leaving criminal justice services by offering advice and referral to a broad range of specialist drug and support services tailored to the needs of local communities.
The project works closely with prescribing services and targets heroin, cocaine or crack users with established drug habits and a history of associated offending behaviour. The CJIT works with clients over the age of 18 who reside in the borough of Islington.

Fyrst Step – OOB is a tier 2 service that targets non-Islington offenders released from Pentonville and Holloway Prisons and who are vulnerable and likely to reoffend and/or misuse drugs upon release.
The team provider an escort and support service to these offenders through liaison with their CARAT workers and the CJIT teams outside Islington.

Cranstoun Change@28B provides a drug and alcohol structured treatment programme for those who are continuing to use drugs and / or alcohol but are seeking to stabilise their use and work towards abstinence.

Cranstoun Change@28B offers a broad range of services within the Treatment and Recovery Programme structure through a rolling and modular structured treatment programme of 16 weeks. Clients need to be able and willing to engage a minimum of three days per week.

Cranstoun Recovery@28B provides a high intensity day programme which supports clients to maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol in order to aid their recovery and reintegration.
The service offers a regular, peer led abstinent aftercare for those who have completed the abstinence programme and have remained abstinent for the last three months.
The service is open to residents of Islington andCamdenwho are in need of treatment for their drug and/or alcohol problem and would like to stay abstinent. Specific interventions are available for abstinent individuals who have been court ordered to attend drug and/or alcohol treatment.

CASA's Families, Partners and Friends Service is an accessible and supportive service for people over 18 affected by alcohol or drug use of someone close to them. We help adult family members, partners and friends of substance misusers to better understand the nature of substance misuse and its effect on them, look at their own needs and work towards meeting these. Sometimes that involves helping them to support the substance misuser into and through the treatment.

Cranstoun's Skills for Life Programme offers a specialist education, work placement & employment service to people affected by drug and alcohol misuse.
We offer career coaching, workshops (CV design, job searching, completing application forms, job interviews, psychometric testing and many more), training courses, social activities (such as gardening, cooking, health & fitness) and one to one support, to enable you to develop interpersonal & social skills, gain practical work experience and qualifications to equip you with the tools to enter (or re-enter) the world of work or learning.

Pilion Trust – IM ACE Project
IM ACE Mentoring Aftercare Project is a Service User led mentoring and befriending service based in Islington.
IMACE is a community focused project which enables people to re-establish ties with their local and wider community.
Members will include people returning from drug and alcohol treatment, prison or mental health establishments. Through one-one peer mentoring we aim to create a healthy environment for members to flourish, giving them the opportunity to succeed.

Supported housing
Supported housing is accommodation where housing support is provided to homeless single people for a period until they can move on in a planned way to live independently. In supported housing, clients can receive housing related support to develop the skills they need to manage a tenancy and address their individual support needs. The eventual aim of supported housing is to enable the client to sustain a tenancy of their own when they move out of the project.
SHP Floating Support Service for People with Substance Misuse Problems
Islington Substance Use Floating Support provides support for single people aged over 18 in Islington who require support maintaining their tenancy due to a substance use issue in Islington. It will assist clients to address their substance misuse issues, implement harm minimisation strategies, develop their independent living skills, maintain their tenancies and access appropriate specialist services including drug and alcohol treatment agencies.

Alcoholics Anonymous provides confidential help 365 days per year to people who are alcoholic or who have a drinking problem. We provide personal local contacts, and introduction to the 4,200 local AA groups that meet weekly in the UK, of which over 700 are in the Greater London area. We also provide literature describing the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and the twelve-step program of recovery from alcoholism.
